Can confidence be taught?


Confidence is sometimes viewed as a mythical entity, a magical force that only some people seem to have – but is this true or can confidence be taught?

For those who are confident, there seems to be a natural state that they can go it to whenever they wish in any situation. Whereas for the unconfident life can be a tortuous place where fear and anxiety take over and stop them having what they want or being who they want to be.

Confidence brings an ability to connect with other people easily, to build rapport and trust. Being confident gives a sense of certainty that we can achieve what we set out to achieve and be who we want to be – that we can be authentic to ourselves and live life on our terms.

Can confidence be taught? The more appropriate question to be asked is – can confidence be learned? The simple answer to the question is – Yes, absolutely confidence can indeed be both taught and learned. While not often recognised as such, confidence is an emotion that we feel just like happiness, sadness, joy or gratitude.

How can emotions be taught or learned? I hear you cry; the answer is more simple than it first seems. The majority of people in this world believe that emotions happen to them and not that emotions are controlled by them and should be happening for them.

Emotions, at their core level, are a series of patterns that we, as human beings, run throughout our body, mind and nervous system. Those models of emotion are discovered through study and examination and, once identified, can be controlled and influenced – and confidence is no different.

The real question therefore is – can you be taught how to be confident? Can you learn confidence? The answer is as straightforward as it was before – Yes, you can – and I would love to be the person to teach you!
